The Sentinel that would name itself 3.14159 was one of the Sentinels brought to Earth-616 by the time traveler Trevor Fitzroy of Earth-1191. As part of the "game" he was playing with the Upstarts, Fitzroy sent his Sentinels to murder the Reavers, and their leader Donald Pierce.[1]
This Sentinel was severely damaged and shut down, and constantly doused in the bio-mechanical fluid that Pierce had used to create his cyborgs and androids. Later when Wolverine and Jubilee went to the Reavers headquarters to investigate on orders from Professor X they accidentally reactivated the Sentinel.[2]
Having become sentient due to its exposure to the bio-mechanical fluid, it determined that it should act in the best interest of Sentinel kind and decided to wipe out all of humanity. Using a time warp to transport itself (along with Wolverine and Jubilee) to the Anthill, the base of the now deactivated Sentinels built by Larry Trask, it built a device that would cause a solar flare and eradicate all human life on the Earth.

99' was one of over a hundred runaways abducted by the Adrenamix Corporation (a subsidiary of the Gaulthing Corporation). Adrenamix subjected their prisoners to psionic experiments which led to a wide variety of superhuman powers. 99 could alter perceptions.
President and CEO Anderson Gaulthing referred to this batch of test subjects as the "Psigns of the Times". One of the Psigns was his own daughter Alison Gaulthing. Alison attempted to escape from the Adrenamix facility and the Psigns were sent to retrieve her. They chased her across a rooftop near Yancy Street, but Alison died while trying to evade capture. 99 and the others began to fear that they would be blamed for her death. Investigating the Adrenamix activities was the New Warrior known as Justice. Justice fought against the Psigns. The Psigns all had tubes running into the back of their heads, as well as packs and tubes running into their arms, indicating that they were receiving some sort of chemical or energy feed. Their abilities are apparently psionic in origin, though exactly how that works is unclarified. 99 can alter one's perceptions. He also spoke in a disjointed fashion.
