When the Juggernaut first encountered the X-Men, his temper got the best of him. He killed Professor X and most of the X-Men, thus unknowingly dooming all of humanity and himself. There being no X-Men to realize the threat in time, the Sentinels were built in such a large number that they could overwhelm all super-powered individuals in a single strike. Next, they adapted their own programming to release a lethal radiation to eliminate the source of mutation – humanity itself. Within a rather short while, the Juggernaut, protected by the enchantment of Cyttorak, found himself alone, everyone else dead.[1] Years later, Juggernaut managed to defeat all of the Sentinels. Just when Cain had lost all hope of ever seeing another human face, he went to the Sentinel base and accidentally discovered Magneto and after Magneto's death. The Juggernaut broke through the protective walls around the community, thus exposing them to the radiation as well. Realizing that he had doomed the few people living there to slowly die of radiation poisoning, Cain headed back and left them alone.

This is Charles Xavier's description of Juggernaut: When my stepbrother, Cain Marko, discovered the power residing within the Gem of Cytorrak he became the Unstoppable Juggernaut. Unfortunately, he has since used his almost limitless might to fuel his long-harbored resentment toward me, clashing time and again with myself and the X-Men over the years. Now Cain is being held in The Void, there until he is either rehabilitated, or we devise a means to divest him of the mystic energies which make him such a dangerous foe.
