Alexader Cady was a member of the reinstituted Red Room, which had relocated in America. He was behind the cloning program that resulted in the creation of a clone of the Black Widow following her death at the hands of Captain America. Cady became the handler of Black Widow's clone following her creation, though he was unaware she retained all of the original Widow's memories, since Red Room agent Ursa Major secretly interfered in the process that was supposed to give her only a selected few of the original Natasha Romanoff's memories. On Alexander's behalf, Black Widow targeted the remnants of both Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D..

In the Gulf War, Alex Ellis earned the Purple Heart for dragging his comrade David Dunson out of a war zone while his leg was severely wounded. Unfortunately, David did not survive the War.[2] Once he was back stateside, Alex campaigned for wounded veterans to get more advanced prosthetics for those who lost limbs in combat. He was offered a part in an experiment to give him back his leg for his heroism. Unbeknownst to him, the man who was offering this "gift" was Abner Dunson, father of the comrade Alex pulled to safety. Mr. Dunson somehow blamed Alex for his son's death.[2]
