It was Lotus' first shot at building a midengine GT and it was good enough to hang around for 27 years. It also had the unique ability to transform into a submarine.
Porsche built 25 917s for homologation in 1969. It won Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, only losing when the rules changed. The 917 still holds the Le Mans fastest lap record.
