Originally, it was just a more capable, slightly more comfortable version of the Land Rover. But the Range Rover soon became the epitome of luxurious SUVs and has continued in that role.
Porsche built 25 917s for homologation in 1969. It won Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, only losing when the rules changed. The 917 still holds the Le Mans fastest lap record.
