It was an aerodynamic unibody car in an era when no other cars were. Today virtually all cars are built how it was built more than 75 years ago.
Porsche built 25 917s for homologation in 1969. It won Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, only losing when the rules changed. The 917 still holds the Le Mans fastest lap record.
