99' was one of over a hundred runaways abducted by the Adrenamix Corporation (a subsidiary of the Gaulthing Corporation). Adrenamix subjected their prisoners to psionic experiments which led to a wide variety of superhuman powers. 99 could alter perceptions. President and CEO Anderson Gaulthing referred to this batch of test subjects as the "Psigns of the Times". One of the Psigns was his own daughter Alison Gaulthing. Alison attempted to escape from the Adrenamix facility and the Psigns were sent to retrieve her. They chased her across a rooftop near Yancy Street, but Alison died while trying to evade capture. 99 and the others began to fear that they would be blamed for her death. Investigating the Adrenamix activities was the New Warrior known as Justice. Justice fought against the Psigns. The Psigns all had tubes running into the back of their heads, as well as packs and tubes running into their arms, indicating that they were receiving some sort of chemical or energy feed. Their abilities are apparently psionic in origin, though exactly how that works is unclarified. 99 can alter one's perceptions. He also spoke in a disjointed fashion.

Aaron was the son of Owen Reece, known as the Molecule Man. Aaron had a difficult childhood growing up, with father being a villain and his parents would always fight and argue, eventually his father was arrested and his mother had went away, leaving him all alone. Aaron was able to recover his fathers wand as the last thing he has from him and kept it away from those who would take it from him. Hawkeye and Black Widow were looking for Molecule Man only to encounter his son Aaron who was being targeted by A.I.M. when he was in the possession of his father's wand. After ditching A.I.M., Aaron went the run with Hawkeye and Black Widow in pursuit. Aaron considered the Avengers and A.I.M. the same as they both wanted his father's wand.
